Applied Horn

Course Requirements:
1) All students should own at least the following texts: (required)
a) Embouchure Builder for Horn. Joseph Singer
b) Sixty Selected Studies Book I. Kopprasch
c) Technical Studies for the Cornet. H.L. Clarke
2) Any additional materials, solos, excerpts (books), method books, and or texts
designated by the instructor.
3) Each student carries the responsibility for buying any music and/or recordings
needed for applied study. (Assume the average cost of text books in a typical course per semester).
Expectations/Course Content: 1) Attendance at all scheduled lessons, fully warmed-up and prepared.
a) Make-up lessons may be arranged, if needed, in advance.
b) Lack of preparation for a lesson, for any reason, is NO excuse.
If you come to a lesson clearly unprepared to perform the assigned material you will be subject to immediate dismissal from the lesson with no opportunity for a make-up.
c) All assigned material (solos and/or excerpts) should be well prepared in advance (prior to the scheduled lesson), including but not limited to: fully studying the music; listening to the work/passage (multiple times), understanding all applicable performance elements.
2) Attendance at an average of one applied lesson per week (other than your
own) for observation purposes. See item #1 under “General Policies”.
3) All hornists taking applied lessons will perform in appropriate ensembles as
designated by the instructor.
4) All hornists taking applied lessons will participate in, seminars, masterclasses,
horn ensemble, and all appropriate organized functions of the horn studio, unless directly excused by the instructor.
4) Attendance at all appropriate concerts involving students, faculty, or guest artists on the horn.
5) Development of appropriate skills including, but not limited to, tone, range,
facility, dynamics, and proper performance practice (including improvised
cadenza material and ornamentation as appropriate).
6) Use of digital recording and playback equipment for the purpose of practice
evaluation, audition/competition preparation and tempo/intonation drills. (each student must own or have full access to needed equipment. Minimum: Mini-disc and microphone.
6) Important aspects of performance related injury(s) related to the discipline
will be discussed. These include physical concerns related to the lip, teeth, facial muscles, arms, shoulders, back and lungs. In addition, important concerns and considerations regarding hearing health will be addressed. The student will learn how to adjust relative to diverse acoustical environments and direct exposure to sustained sound in a variety of rehearsal settings. The use of hearing protection as is appropriate/needed will be addressed. The use of headphones/ear inserts when listening to music will be addressed as well.
7) Check your email, the studio website, and my board daily for announcements.
8) Weather related emergencies will follow all policies established by the UA
School of Music. (Posted throughout building)
Course Objectives:
At the conclusion of the course, students will be able to:
1) Create an appropriate sound/tone relative to modern accepted orchestral standards.
2) Explain and demonstrate basic elements necessary for successful execution of technical elements relative to the horn.
a. Articulation
b. Breath support
c. Embouchure formation
d. Hand position (right hand)
e. Posture/playing position
3) Articulate a working knowledge of the basic accepted repertoire for the horn including major solo, orchestral, and chamber works.
4) Discuss and demonstrate accepted pedagogical approaches relative to the horn.
5) Perform successfully in front of an audience, relative to their level of development.
6) Prepare and execute a successful audition, relative to their level of development.
Evaluations:
1) All students will be evaluated based on their individual potential for success
contrasted with the actual level of achievement. This is open for discussion at any time.
2) Each student will perform/participate in appropriate experiences as designated
by the instructor such as, seminar classes, masterclasses, convo, competitions, etc.
3) Semester jury examination. (Content determined by instructor).
Specific Grading Policies:
1) Each lesson during the semester will be given a pass/fail grade.
Final Grades:
A= minimum of 12 passed lessons (with excellent work)
B= minimum of 10 passed lessons (with excellent work)
C= minimum of 8 passed lessons (with excellent work)
D= minimum of 6 passed lessons (with excellent work)
F = less than 6 passed lessons.
General Policies:
1) the horn studio operates with an open lesson policy. Students are encouraged
to observe the lessons of their colleagues. (Quietly and unobtrusively)
2) All performance majors will be expected to meet orchestral excerpt requirements as designated by the instructor.
3) All students studying applied horn will be required to meet the following
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS. By the end of each academic year the student must be able to demonstrate all pertinent technical and musical aspects of each piece listed.
a) Freshman: Kopprash 1-10.
Mozart, Concerto #3, mvmt. 2 b) Sophomore: Kopprash 12-19.
Mozart, Concerti 1 and 3 (complete)
c) Junior: Kopprasch 20-25
Belloli #1 (8 Studies)
Mozart Concerti 1, 2, 3, 4 (Complete)
d) Senior: Kopprasch Book I (Complete)
Strauss Concert #1 (Complete)
*** Any student who is unable to meet these minimum requirements at the
appointed time will not be allowed to continue in the horn studio.
THINGS TO REMEMBER 1) Never begin a sentence with the words “My Lip Feels…….”.
2) If you are working as hard as you can and the problem gets no better, then there is a good chance you are doing it wrong. Find out how to practice more correctly and efficiently and continue working as hard as you can.
3) When you feel “……..I can’t do this…..” remember that the correct statement is….” I haven’t worked hard enough, long enough, to be able to do this, yet.”
4) Consistency in performance is born of consistency in practice. A consistent level of performance comes only after a consistent level of practice, established over the long term.
5) Don’t use excuses………………EVER.
6) YOU CAN do anything, or achieve anything, at any level, IF YOU work HARD enough, LONG enough.
7) If you have a commitment, MEET IT. If you have a responsibility, HONOR IT.
8) Be early…….On time in the music world equals late.
9) When speaking of yourself…..Let your horn speak loudly for you…….Keep your mouth shut.
10) If you don’t like someone……never let them know it. If you like someone……make sure they know it.
11) If you can ever find time to practice more………………Practice more!
